Madness is a captivity of the mind, with the capacity for thought or for action being compromised to a greater or lesser extent. Alienism is the study of its nature. The alienist seeks to treat the mad, often using the proven techinic of hypnosis or the recently introduced technic of electroshock.

Madness can be provoked by large doses of the plant foxglove, the manipulations of the mesmerist, and gaslighting generally.
