Sweet Bay Village is a small and isolated fishing village in the Sweet Bay region of Brazil.[1] There is no mayor nor formal town council; village elders are the only figures of authority recognized. One local figure of importance is Grandmother Manuella.[2]

The Boto is a monster of local legend. It is said to be a dolphin that can change into the form of a man to take beautiful, young women for its lovers in the water. Most die, though those that do survive are said to come back pregnant. Thus children without an apparent father are called Children of the Boto.[3]
