Anchorite is a term for one of the current clergy of Ezra. In 2nd Edition, it referred to a specific class of Priest (2E Class Group) only occurring in Ezra's church.[1] In 3rd Edition, it refers to all priests of Ezra without regard to rank or class.[2] Characters formerly classes as the Anchorite 2nd Edition class can be classed as clerics in 3rd Edition, likely with the Mists spell-domain. There are a number of prestige classes specific to Anchorites: the Anchorite Inquisitor[3], Anchorite of the Mists[4], and Anchorite Wanderer[5].

The Praesidius of the Church is an anchorite and the lowliest member of the clergy is an anchorite. An anchorite of the Mists, a cleric of Ezra, a cloister cleric of Ezra, a paladin of Ezra, and a contemplative of Ezra belong to the clergy and are anchorites. The clergy is in fact quite diverse and so anchorites include, among others, commoners who serve as chaplains, experts specializing in canonical law, Church doctrine, Church finances, and numerology, rangers who bear the message of Ezra to the frontier of civilization, aristocrats who speak for the Church as its ambassadors, rangers, fighters and warriors who are crucial to the battle against the Legions of the Night, and abjurers who attend to security questions with arcane magic.

Anchorities who have ceased, voluntarily or involuntarily, to belong to the clergy of Ezra are former anchorite.

The Anchorite Second Edition Class

Anchorites in Second Edition were somewhat similar to clerics, in that they were divine spellcasters and could turn undead. In addition, manifest anchorites could manifest the shield of Ezra several times per day for short periods, and they also had the mist walking special ability. However, their selection of spells were more limited, and anchorites could wear only metal armor or none at all, fitting the image of the Ezrite priest. Like clerics, Anchorites of Lawful Good or Lawful Neutral alignment could use bludgeoning weapons, but anchorites of True Neutral alignment could use any one-handed weapons, as the latter was charged with fighting with a shield in the off-hand.[1]

In 3rd Edition, the shield of Ezra special ability was given to clerics with the Mists spell-domain. The armor restrictions and mist walking special ability appeared in some of the Ezrite-specific prestige classes.
