Coroners are state agents charged with establishing cause of death. Unlike forensic pathologists, they do not limit their investigations to evidence that can be obtained from corpses. And unlike police detectives, they do not need to suspect foul play to launch an investigation.

Coroners are rarely involved when the cause of death appears to be natural and there is no reason or no desire to suspect otherwise. And they are rarely employed in lands where the authorities are unconcerned with accounting for unexplained deaths and generally protecting the public. In a place where securing the well-being of the citizenry is a priority, its law enforcement agency may benefit from the presence of a coroner who can uncover crimes in the process of tracking and investigating deaths that did not appear initially to be unlawful. Equally, a coroner may identify causes of death resulting from simple ignorance, poor procedures, inadequate standards, or bad policy.

Paridon, in particular, employs a coroner who also has responsibilities as a forensic pathologist and who works closely with its police force.
