The goblin beast[1] and the caliban are kin of a sort. Both are twisted in the womb by exposure to powerful corruptive forces. The degree of corruption differs however. The caliban conceived of human stock remains a humanoid. The goblin beast conceived of animal or vermin stock is changed into a magical beast. Game statistics for goblin beasts can be derived using the Goblin Beast Template.

Goblin beasts are stronger, tougher, and far more cunning creatures than the unpolluted stock from which they are born. Mated pairs of goblin beasts derived from the same stock breed true. Goblins have achieved a degree of control over goblin beasts, making frequent use of them as guards and mounts. Worgs are offered as an example of a goblin beast that has succeeded in spreading far and wide. The corruptive aura of hags seems to be especially conducive to the spawning of goblin beasts for the creatures are closely identified with Tepest.

Encountering Goblin Beasts

Goblin beasts can be encountered in Tepest, where they are also known as autumn beasts.[2] The dread familiars of the Three Hags are goblin beasts.[3]

John W. Mangrum's Goblin Beast Lore[4]

Characters with ranks in Knowledge (arcana) can learn more about goblin beasts. Characters may need to make separate Knowledge checks to learn about the base creature. When a character makes a successful skill check, the following lore is revealed, including the information from lower DCs.

DC Result

  • 14 This creature was been permanently warped by unnatural forces, transforming it into a goblin beast. This result reveals all Magical Beast traits.
  • 19 Goblin beasts are to the beasts of the wild as calibans are to human kind. Their birth heralds the presence of supernatural evil, such as a witch. Goblyn beasts are stronger, smarter, and decidedly more malevolent than their natural kin. Fortunately, they are visibly warped as well.
  • 24 Goblins have an unnatural affinity for goblin beasts, often using them as mounts or guardians. These fell creatures are often found together.
