Land-based powers[1][2][3] are special abilities fiends can get by bonding with the land of the Demiplane of Dread through special and perverse arcane rituals known as power rituals. A land-based power is specific to the domain it was gained in. For example, if a fiend performed a power ritual in Borca, he would gain the Poison Touch land-based power whereas he would gain the Cause Hunger land-based power if he performed the ritual in G'Henna. Despite being domain-specific in their effects, land-based powers may be used outside of their domain in origin.

Gaining land-based powers represent a kind of ironic temptation for the fiend, for they do not come without associated costs and risks. The power ritual is dangerous, in that failure can cause significant mystical backlash against the fiend, possibly destroying the fiend entirely. Moreover, gaining land-based powers represents a sort of corruption of fiends, in that their reality wrinkle shrinks and they become more closely bounded to the Land of Mists. Therefore, there is an increased chance they may never leave, should they ever locate the means to do so. Gaining land-based powers also increases the chance for the power ritual to fail. A fiend's corruption as incurred by the use of power rituals is known as the Corruption Index.
