Presenting... Mistipedia

I have thought long and hard aobut the Dommark and still intend to write a Quothed the Ravenloft piece on it. I chopped down the material to the entry in the Mistipedia. On the one hand, it is all extremely well grounded on known fact about the Dommark and Nova Vaasa; on the other hand, the explicit description of the Dommark in Gaz V is a handful of lines. So there is speculation (for selecting appropiate monsters off the known list for Nova Vaasa), but there is also more creative speculation about the meaning of the moniker "Plains of Judgement." Nowhere in canon does it explicitly say that it is a place of testing, but it is clearly a place where fugitives could flee and die, making it such so far as the priesthold and most Nova Vaasans are concerned. So to my eye it is on the edge and I am not sure what to do about that.
Similarly, the article on the Church of the Lawgiver treats the "Influence and Reach" of the faith and I try to describe the situation as the Church see it, but in more detail than exists explicitly in the Gaz V. Again it is on the edge and I am not sure what to do about that.

I love the gryphonhill.com maps but it is important to note that they are all PRE-gazeteer. Ideally, maps from the Gaz should be used but i imagine this would run into copyright issues. there was a list someplace on gryphonhill.com that listed all locations and rated them from 1 to 5 stars based on their veracity with canon. I think it would be very helpful both for this project and the catalogue. It can be found on the very fron page: http://www.fraternityofshadows.com/Gryp ... /index.htm "Available for Download: Sites by Domain"
Gonzoron of the FoS wrote:I agree, it should be noted near the map that it includes non-canon extrapolations from the canon map. We could work up a template to include. Nerit already made Template:MCS (use it by typing {{MCS}}, look at it or edit it by going to the page Template:MCS) , and we could just add a disclaimer to that, but I'd rather have something right under the map as well.cure wrote:'But another problem, although not a technical one, has reared its monstrous head. The Gryphonhill maps are, on one hand, nice to have, and, on the other, wildly inaccurate in some cases at least.

I have already started a domain's geography section with a warning about this, but perhaps a note should be attached 'automagically' under the lot of the maps, non?
In fact, it's probably worth making a generic "non-canon" template, since I put forth in the guidelines that we should clearly deliniate... (an opinion I feel strongly about.)

Well, keeping in mind that I am not the final arbiter of such things... (We see that the vast majority disagreed with me on where the catalogue info should be on the page). IMHO, anything you add which is not explicit from the canon source material should be indicated as such. Such additions are quite useful, and should have a place in the wiki. But when someone is referring to the wiki as a reference, they need to be able to find "just the facts". I've got a ton of stuff I could add to Nidala, for example, but this isn't a netbook, it's an "encyclopedia."cure wrote:On that point, there are two entries that I would ask you about.Gonzoron of the FoS wrote: In fact, it's probably worth making a generic "non-canon" template, since I put forth in the guidelines that we should clearly deliniate... Most people aren't total sticklers for canon, but everyone changes things in their own and different ways, and the wiki's place isn't to make our own additions and state them as fact.
Other people, feel free to agree or disagree, but that's how I see it.

Actually, ideally, better maps than the Gaz's should be used, because a lot of them are awful, and don't even include things introduced on the same page!Strahdsbuddy wrote: Ideally, maps from the Gaz should be used but i imagine this would run into copyright issues.
But yes, we really don't want to put the Gaz maps (or any other image from the books) without permission. That's why the GH maps (while not perfect) are a great resource.
Of course, anyone who want to make a better, updated map and upload it, you are more than welcome to do so!

Indeed, that is what I found out in the Companion Atlas to the Gazs - http://www.fraternityofshadows.com/Maus ... tteers.pdf
The maps were botched in most of the cases...

Insofar as I'm running out of plants to add, I've been looking at what other collections of trivia I can sprinkle into the Mistipedia, and I think I may do food and drink. Looking back over my own notes on the subject, I found the "Drinks Of The Core" list in the Alanik Ray vaults. Do I have to paraphrase this, or can I C&P it? It's not a netbook, or even a webdoc per se; most of Alanik's "articles" were snipped from listserv conversations.

Well, we've already said that pictures have to be either copyright-free or already available on the fos site. I don't see why that shouldn't extend to text as well. We've got permission to host Alanik Ray's archives. Whether we host it in a pdf or in the wiki or both seems to me irrelevant, in my layman's understanding of things.
So I see nothing wrong with C&P, but you probably want to make a note of where the info came from (possibly with the <ref> notation. See the Mistipedia Help page for details)
