At least in 2e, a paladin could honorably withdraw from combat if outnumbered 3:1, or the level equivalent. So if it really did come down to a fight with Soth, then I doubt anybody would blame a 4th level paladin from hightailing it.
Also, does detect evil work in Ravenloft?

If Dofur is paladin I think he can see how evil is Soth. So yes maybe detect evil doesn't work in RL but Soth "transpires evilness" that a paladin might get at least this is what I think. But as always depends on DM

Good point. There's also the fact that we've got a train of civilians with us, so withdrawing would risk exposing the noncombatants. Given that, even Dorgio would probably fight--if not or honor then to distract the enemy long enough for the civs to get out of there.Rafael wrote:Thanks, Brock.
But how does Dofur understand that Soth is what he is?![]()
I like that!Rafael wrote:
IMC, detect evil in RL usually goes along with a madness check.
- Which pretty much annihilates every paladin within the first two adventure sessions.

'Detect Evil':
Dofur can sense if a person is truly pure of heart, as a baby or a very small child is pure. His mentor told him that a Champion of the Earth-Mother can sniff out a hell-spawned fiend that hides in dwarf-shape (or man-shape, elf-shape, etc). This, he has never had occasion to test. His special sense may often discriminate between a scofflaw or habitual rebel and an honest , law-abiding citizen- but this ability is not perfect.
There are limits. The unspoken sins and dark passions of the soul-the stuff of true evil- these things are concealed from Dofur's abilities of special perception.
As Dofur's mentor once told him:
''Watch with your eyes, reason with your mind, and judge with your heart. Evil can take many forms, and some of these may at first seem fair and noble, but are in truth filthy and rotten beneath the facade.''

You have, including Ottokar, 22 immigants with you. About half are men able to bear arms, the rest are women and children. They have brought basic supplies for travel and subsistence. The men bear simple arms like hand axes, knives, hunting bows, some boar spears.
