Norzak was known for his violent and antisocial behavior. On several occasions Jon and Dorgio witnessed him bully, abuse, and even torture prisoners. He cut of a man's finger. Thora looks and acts very much like a female Norzak.

It's not a stretch for Jon to assume that there was torture- or for Dorgio to assume it.

Nice! I'm still trying to hunt down a good cheap copy of The Black Company. I just started reading Vampire$ by John Steakly, and it's way, way better than the movie (John Carpenter's Vampires). Steakly's other major book, Armor, is pretty great too.
