I put my glasses down somewhere over the weekend I can't find them anywhere. So I've been walking around without glasses on.

Suddenly, everybody looks beautiful.

Been there. Then I had Lasik and I can't take the proverbial glasses off now. But what I really miss are those rose-tinted glasses. Everything looked so much better. Now my jaded view makes things look worse.

On being an old fart:

One of my players came up with this gem recently:

"Bing, who was that Russian politician with the weird birthmark on his head?"

...

I was about to say something cross to her but then I did the maths and suddenly realized this player was born after the fall of the Soviet Union.

To put things in perspective, this player is old enough to vote and buy alcoholic drinks in the United States.

I feel old now.

Back in 2008 I shared the alarming news that the baby from the cover of Nirvana's album Nevermind (and owner if the world's most famous baby pee-pee) had turned seventeen.

Two people in my gaming group were old enough that the mere fact that I considered the Nevermind album to be old made them feel old.

One if the girls in my gaming group is extremely skilled at making excellent cocktails, despite being too young to legally buy them in bars.

If you can't help but feel many players who can't even spell, use proper grammar, and don't know what half the words they're using even means while playing an MMO, you might be getting old.

If you can't understand half the words people as little as five years younger than you use these days, you might be getting old.

If you can remember things like VHS, vinyl, cassette tapes, and laser discs, you might be getting old.

If you played AD&D 2e or earlier and remember things like THAC0, racial level limits, and classes restricted by race, you definitely are getting old.

Philosophical discussions with family:

(HMB and HDT are brothers. LoudDad is loud dad.)

HMB: Do you think it is possible to stop technological advance in the name of social stability?

HDT: It would be difficult, as most individuals tend to seek improved methods of facing daily challenges. As long as innovation exists in the microcosmic level, keeping it out of the macrocosm will be near-impossible. After all, necessity is the mother of invention.

LoudDad (was not present for the start of the discussion but wants to make his contribution based on the very last sentence heard): Yes, very true. When I first saw your mother, I knew straight away that she would be good with money, virtuous and ethical, and would give me fine young sons. I have been married to her for forty years and I have lived an excellent life because of her. So you should try to find a wife who is like your mother, and I can guarantee you that you will be happy and have peace of mind and no regrets. Okay? Okay. Good sons! Go hug your mother!

(LoudDad wanders off abstractedly.)

HMB and HDT (look at each other in confusion): ...What the hell just happened???

Addendum:

(SmallMom is washing vegetables, minding her own business.)

(Two wild LargeSons appear and hug SmallMom simultaneously.)

HMB: HugMom!

HDT: HugMom!

HMB: HugMom!

HDT: HugMom!

HMB: HugMom!

HDT: HugMom!

(Gravitational interactions mean that SmallMom is briefly levitating.)

(LargeSons run off.)

StunnedMom: ...what the hell just happened?

I'm lying in bed, typing on my laptop, minding my own business.

Suddenly, my intestines make a noise that very clearly sounds like the word "ABORT".

I stare at my abdomen in confusion but my intestines are silent. And rather smug.

...

WHAT DO THEY KNOW ABOUT ME THAT I DON'T KNOW???

I'm going to buy me a damn pregnancy kit now.

Don't worry, Bing. I've had the same thing happen to me. It's called "The Great Body Rebellion," aka, middle age. The brain used to be the dictator, but now the body's a wide open democracy where every bone, organ, and sinew gets a vote. Soon they won't even be able to agree on anything and that results in bad government, voter unrest, and saddest of all, a hanging chad.

The proceeding nonsense was brought to you by Red Green.

That... actually makes perfect sense. Thank you.

On a potentially related note, I recently tried some metamucil and it is quite possibly the single greatest thing that dietary science has come up with.

Two brief springtime stories, short and sweet:

On opportunities you should take when you can

A beautiful female acquaintance left town today. While chatting on the way out, we unexpectedly discovered that our unspoken attraction for each other was mutual, but it was too late to do anything about it.

No sex but we totally high fived.

...and on opportunities you probably shouldn't take, ever

A lesbian acquaintance told me essentially the same thing today too, while drunk. She and her cohabiting girlfriend are both members of my gaming group and we're currently having an amazing Ravenloft campaign which is the high points of our social lives generally.

I'm very flattered but I think the wisest thing to do is to pretend this never happened. For multiple reasons of common sense.
