imagine a stately house with a huge library, and many one of a kind novels in it. the house use to belong to a celebrated author who vanished, the house dos not have a good history but many writers have found success (and/or madness) in that house.
you see the books like any good novel draws you in to it, literally. you ether are drawn in to the story or you release it to plays out around you.
example: three little pigs: 1. you are now near a pigs house and the wolf may see you as better pray, 2. a angry wolf with gale force breath is outside and a pig wants to know who you are and why you are in his house.
also, a monster hunter used some of the books as a prison for some nasty things.

Re: the dark library
The Tome of Terror (see Forged of Darkness) is has this motif. It's a cursed storybook artifact draws you into a world of twisted and nightmarish fairy tales.
As a library, this idea could perhaps exist as a defense mechanism for the library of Vecna, a section of Azalin's black vault, or perhaps even a lost or secret library for the erudite faction of the Ezran church. Or a product of shadow fey whmsy.
Actually, an entrapping library would be perfect as part of the curse of Blind Paul and his Library of the Damned (see QtR 25 p. 84), as this would regularly deprive Paul of people to read to him while also giving the domain a lot more versatility at the same time.

Re: the dark library
The library actively working against him definitely makes this more entertaining. In addition to traps and magic shenanigans, I'm picturing moving book shelves and the like to make it hard for people to find each other (either on purpose or by accident). The Lesser Evil wrote: Actually, an entrapping library would be perfect as part of the curse of Blind Paul and his Library of the Damned (see QtR 25 p. 84), as this would regularly deprive Paul of people to read to him while also giving the domain a lot more versatility at the same time.
Re: the dark library
some of the horror is that for you in the story, you are a character in the book, you may change the story, you may not, but you are in stasis and youer only sense of time is the narrative.
i keep thinking how the books change with someone in them.
how much changes just by being thare?
how much power dos the narrative have to predetermined?
how dos the tone of story change things?
can you kill the main character and what happins if you do?
