NPC Journals

Post by onmyoji »

Has anyone created materials that serve as journal entries for any famous NPCs? Van Richten and Strahd, for example, have famously kept journals, as have (I'm sure) a host of other characters.

So has anyone attempted to recreate either the whole thing or (more likely) parts of the whole? I'd be interested in seeing what anyone might have come up with thus far. To be clear, I'm looking for original content from DMs/GMs—not excerpts appearing in novels or quoted in modules and such.

Honestly surprised I haven't heard of any attempt at a full RVR journal (though maybe I haven't looked hard enough for it?).

The most I've done is scraps of things for the PCs to find. Nothing that could be construed as a real full journal. You could see some examples in my campaign journals: www.themistway.com

That's exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about. Even just an entry here and there. Part of me is curious because I went through and found all the RVR quotes I could find and there were substantially fewer than I'd thought. Wasn't sure if anyone else had tried to string them all together into a coherent journal, or otherwise fill some of the gaps.

Not just for him, necessarily, but other prominent NPCs also.

By the way Gonzoron, thanks so much for your campaign write-ups. Not only did they give me inspiration on how to handle FoG myself (you had linked it in a much earlier forum post that I chanced to find a month or two ago via google), but also how to handle write-ups and such for my own campaign. (We've only had one session so far and probably will meet every other week, but it's at http://strahd.wikidot.com/ )

Thank you for the kind words. Glad I could help. (FoG is a mess, but I do love it so. <looks up at the FoG poster not 2 feet away on the wall>) I look forward to following your campaign.

I bought my original copy more than a decade ago, a used copy without the poster :(
I remember seeing it in my local gaming store when it was released but hadn't started DMing yet.
It is also one of my favourite modules, when I played it it was from a photocopy I had bought from someone around 1996.

They are well-deserved. I did rewrite where I'm taking FoG and I think I have something nice and decently interesting planned out narratively speaking (following your advice to only do Teufeldorf once, of course). I have something particularly nice planned for Dominiani.

However, one tiny disclaimer: the goblyns themselves kinda got written out in favor of something more narratively appropriate, given a teensy detail in FoG as-written that was long-ago incorporated into the main campaign in a particular way. Sorry if that's too much in terms of editing.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I do have a post about the campaign itself on here, so I think I'll update that every time the campaign wiki is significantly updated.
