Which (canon) Darklords are curious about other domains?
Which (canon) Darklords are curious about other domains?
I'm trying to piece together some backstory for a work-in-progress in any of the 2e or 3e eras, and need a Darklord or other significant canon NPC to be interested in learning more about the Demiplane in general. Azalin's the obvious choice, but with his involvement in 3e's "S"-capades (sorry/not sorry) I'd prefer to have someone else poking into Things Evil Overlords Weren't Meant To Know. Strahd's too focused on Tati, Soth's too mopey, Gwydion's too stuck in his portal, etc. Bluebeard is a possibility given his need to draw in wives from outside. I considered van Richten or the twins, but I'm not sure I want to use characters that have been that prominent in player-facing fiction. So, who am I overlooking that would have an interest in lands outside their own?

Mordenheim is a scientist, he might inquire.

Drakov has made inroads to investigate in order to conquer.
Personally though, I would use Hazlik. He has the "mage's reasons" to investigate. Perhaps components for his big projects. Perhaps a magic item. Or just petty revenge on someone that displeased him and moved out before Hazlik realized and locked the border.

Hazlik would, I think. Or Baron Lyron Evensong certainly has lots of time to contemplate the nature of the demiplane. If you're willing to consider non-darklords, there's the Fraternity of Shadows.

In 2E lore, Anton Misroi is said to be remotely monitoring the affairs in other domains via mind travel, and it even says that he's not happy with what he sees there.
There's the Fraternity of Shadows, which can't go unmentioned given the website we're on.
In the novel Spectre of the Black Rose, Malocchio Aderre is said to have a private spy network called the Inquest, whose agents bring him information about the current affairs of other realms and their darklords.
According to late 3E lore, Ivana Boritsi controls the Boritsi Trading Company, a mercantile network devoted to buying and selling lucrative goods, including valuable information. The Company is said to have trading posts and offices in several domains, including Mordent and Liffe.
Also in 3E lore, Vlad Drakov has a Ministry of Intelligence, a highly bureaucratic organization devoted to reconnaissance, sabotage and counter-intelligence to aid the darklord's military ambitions.
If you don't mind pulling some really obscure 2E lore, there's the Dark Pawn, a mysterious NPC who is the owner of the legendary Book of Souls, and is said to be the agent of the Dark Powers themselves, constantly traveling the demiplane and testing the worthiness of darklords and the resolve of those who oppose them. The Book of Souls is described in Dragon Magazine issue #234.
Last but not least, Death leads a secret undead cabal called The Unholy Order of the Grave, which aims to further its sinister anti-life agenda throughout the Demiplane of Dread. Certainly, information gathering would be part of that mission.

I also was going to mention anton misroi. His ability to scry on the other domains is pretty massive, and though he might not consider the other darklords to be "living" up to their full potential, he definitely keeps abreast of the goings on in other realms.
