Was there a gate of somesort leading somewhere beneath Castle Avernus, or was that just popular misperception of Azalin's summonings?

The Rift Spanner only needs 100 experience levels of victims to charge it fully. Styrix and her (completed) Rift Spanner first appeared in a MC which was published in 1993, since which time the Ravenloft timeline has advanced roughly two decades. If Styrix *STILL* hasn't been able to snag that many victims for her gadget -- especially during those years when Azalin was drifting in limbo, making her usual secrecy less critical -- then she's either the laziest or the slowest night hag ever. :-/Drinnik Shoehorn wrote:Actually, the Gaz II says the Rift Spanner would work, it's just Styrix hasn't fully charged it yet.
I know Gaz II still has the Rift Spanner, in exactly the same condition that it was in 12 years ago, but I honestly don't buy it. Does *everything* interesting that's ever happened in the Land of Mists have to be coming to a head in the 740s-750s? If you ask me, it'd be more interesting if the Rift Spanner never worked in the first place ... or if it *does* transport you out of the Land of Mists, but deposits you someplace even nastier (the Far Realm, perhaps?). It'd be a handy way for Styrix to get rid of any enemies who try to force her to free them from Ravenloft, while she covertly works on ANOTHER artifact she can safely use herself.....

Styrix's slowness had intrigued me as well, but I think it could be explained with meddling from pesky adventurers. The hag might have once had the device fully charged, only to have some random group of do-gooders destroy it and force her to start anew. Also, don't forget that most of her victims don't go into fueling her device, but serve as meal: her night hag diet requires her to devour one human per night.
Also: it may be harder to find higher-level humans (though now that they have NPC levels in 3e that may have changed a bit) and disappearing LOTS of low-level people will cause a ruckus.
Further, the Spanner leaks a level per day, so if there's protracted periods of bad hunting (a couple weeks or worse, months) it could lose quite a bit.

Would her phylactery be her "Periapt of Foulness"?Hashmalum wrote:... Shouldn't she have a phylactery? If she has one, and it isn't in her possession (maybe Azalin has it tucked away somewhere), she might be too tightly tied to the demiplane to leave even _with_ the Rift Spanner.
