Yeah any teleport trap that you want to be unnoticed has to affect the whole party. The trigger can be located in the center of the range of the trap and hit everyone in a certain radius. I'm thinking of putting the "hallway life-sapper" teleporter on a spiral staircase to make it even more subtle. Decoy artifacts are good, but I already pulled that on them in Feast of Goblyns, so I might not use it again.

I agree, if you want to really seal away an artifact, why mess around with traps that can be disarmed and puzzles with a solution that can be figured out? Just seal it in a few hundred feet of cement, right? I bugs me too, but it's the basic suspension of disbelief required for a dungeon, so whatcha gonna do... But yes, my basic idea is they want to keep it safe until they find a way to destroy it. That's the basic idea of the Guardian's society in general.

For more details, see the original thread, but the reason the party wants it is because they want to keep their arch-enemy from getting it. Since he's a golem, he can slip past most of the defenses. The Guardians have found a ritual to destroy it, but never tried it before because:

a) It's dangerous, and they never had reason to believe the dungeon would fail before, so they didn't risk it.
b) A fire in the library many years ago destroyed the plans of the dungeon, so they don't know how to bypass the traps.

Now that the PC's are on the scene, and they know Vir is on the way, and could get through the dungeon, the danger of the ritual is an acceptable risk, but the Guardians aren't as qualified to brave the dungeon as the PC's are, so the PC's will head to the dungeon to get the dagger before Vir does, and the Guadians will start prepping the ritual for their return.

Manofevil wrote:The most logical creation of a labyrinth I've ever seen was in a movie on PBS called 'Gormandghast'. Based on a book, it's about a castle and it's denizens which has been ruled by one family for 66 generations. Each generation has added this or that to the building as time went on and after all that time, there is far more space than the royal family and staff could possibly live in. Truthfully, they could put up everyone in the kingdom and still have more space than they need. There are thousands of old forgotten family possessions and even more nooks and crannies with some story or another to them. If you're looking for a logical way to build a labyrinth. Perhaps the first thing to do is create a history to the place, then maybe the rest will take care of itself. Maybe.
Just wanna say thanks, when you mentioned this I decided to check it out and really loved it!
