The Evil Eye

Post by vipera aspis »

I am planning on running my pc's though the Evil Eye adventure. what i am asking is have/has anyone(players and dm's alike) run in to any problems running it or playing it? Maybe something that needs more focus then was given? it seems like a great adventure, so i'm not TO worried but i would like to hear some feedback from those who have delt with it in the past. i have read it, and re-read it. and am now converting it to 3.0 and 3.5. thanks.

I too will be running this adventure...next saturday in fact, though in 2ed. So I would also appreciate any info.

My party consists of a thief(4th), mage(4th), ranger(3rd), Anchorite(4th).

My inspirations when I ran it were other people's campaign journal on running Evil Eye.

So I strongly suggest:

Stu's Campaign journal (from the Smoking Room section of this site)

Ron's campaign (links to this journal in the Stables, under "Ron's Ravenloft Page" - read it all, it's full of good ideas, but Evil Eye sessions are 3 to 6)

And my own, same area as Stu's, was made after reading these two.

In these three, I'm sure you'll find interesting variants and additions.

Evil Eye is one of the best adventure for RL, by the way. Good choice.

The Evil Eye is more a collection of shorter adventure that link into a campaign, my advice is to expand these adventures or make sure they at least knit together seamlessly, otherwise the beginnings and ends to some of the mini-adventures have a habit of being noticable.

The Evil Eye is (IMO) the best RL adventure ever!

 Aww, shucks, I'm blushing, Joel.

I agree with everyone else, you've picked one heck of a great module. It's my favorite module ever. But there are a few caveats I have:

1) Be careful to involve the players and make sure they don't feel like spectators. There are so many NPC's running around with their own motivations, the PC's can sometimes not understand what they are doing, or why they need to be there.

2) Make sure the vistani impress on the PC's the importance of what they plan to do to Mallocchio. At face value, even imprisoning him in Invidia doesn't seem like such a punishment. They have to know that leaving him free would endager the very fabric of the world. Or if you don't want them knowing that much, find another reason. But they have to know it's important to bind him or else they will feel like they didn't accomplish anything.

3) don't try to do it all at once. It will take a long time. It took me 2.5 full weekend sessions.

Hope you have fun, it's a great adventure!

Oh! Something I forgot to mention before, if you have access to a Tarokka deck, use it! Within the vistani section of the adventure there is a great opportunity for the vastani to break out the cards and use them as an additional tool to underline how dangerous Malocchio is. If you don't have a tarokka deck, use a pack of playing cards and write the name of the tarokka represented onto the face of each card. Plan out your reading in advance and use the DM screen to help you stack the deck. Pull the cards you will be using off the top and then shuffle the rest of the deck, once done, place the cards you have hidden back on top. This will make it more real for the players and still let you stack the deck good and proper  It is also alot easier than learning to stack a deck while shuffling the conventional way, lol.

If the players are felling left out at any point, bring the Vistani back in and provide another portent of doom. If necessary, make one or two of the PC's other obstacles in Malocchio's path, making them targets for the nastiness at hand. This worked well for me when a player felt isolated.

I've owned that adventure for some time and never read it. But due to what all of you have said about it I am kind of excited to look at it. Sounds like a good one.

Sure, it's a good way to introduce the tarokka.

Yes Ron, I like your campaign. Please let us know when it is updated :)

A problem I had with the module is the way the PCs are supposed to believe Nathan's story of "sleeping while the battle with the wolf happened". As you saw in my journal, my players didn't buy it and it made for interesting unpredicted twists :)

As Joel mentioned with unpredictable twists, be prepared for them in this game, the players can and will do things in ways you will not expect quite ften, be be sure to think fast if necessary. For instance, my lot wanted to chase down the Slasher as soon as they heard of her, one player fell in love with Gabby without her charming him, another thought that Anton Regess wasn't a bad guy and wanted to join his forces, etc.. LOL.
