I actually liked the layout of the Ravenloft books. The gothic headers, footers and parchment for each page gave the line a good quality and consistent feel, instead of a slapdash change of layout every other book.
I have to agree the about maps. All of the ones included for 3rd Edition were pretty dire and barely gave you anything other than an overview of the Core and its domains.
