Shamless Plug

Post by Rucht Lilavivat »

All right. Some people have been wondering what I was working on and when I would be able to talk about it. Well, here it is:

http://www.morriganrpg.com/gm-preorder.html

If you scroll down, you'll see it. It's right after the eco game but before the Revolution game.

I have the good fortune to say that this is only one of the things I'm working on. When it rains, it pours, I guess.

Anyhow, Unhallowed has been literally a dream come true. I got to design my own horror game from the top to the bottom; calling my own shots. A pretty amazing opporunity, really.

Hey Rucht, that is quite cool. And that you write again too. Keep us posted on your work - all with Morrigan Press or other companies as well?

Care to share a little more on the Unhallowed book content? What can we expect from it? I understand it's a different game setting, but do you think it can also help a RL DM?

(how many page? Date of release? The site doesn't say much to sell these preorders ...)

Rucht, this looks pretty cool. I searched around and I found a more descriptive page for the product here Joel.

Ah, after years of sham plugs - those that don't work properly when inserted, clicked, or chewed - I'm delighted to see you bring us a "shamless plug"! ;) Good work!

Still doesn't say much about the system itself... :( Still it seems good enough to me. Well done Rucht and congratulations.

An edge horror sourcebook for the Omni System™. Edge horror is a genre of horror that relatively new. This genre relies more on style and presentation to define it rather than subject matter or theme. It emphasizes vivid imagery and a focus on small details. It relies on an iceberg method of horror, only showing the audience enough of something to make it terrifying. Fiction or movies of this genre are works of high-tension, where a constant level of threat or mistrust pervades the scene. Finally, edge horror is primarily about real people and the way they interact with each other.

A prime example of edge horror would be the film The Ring. Throughout either movie, it’s the small details that are the most horrifying. The image of a single book, or a pail of water can be used to evoke feelings of dread and terror. Something as simple as a ladder propped up against a wall is just as threatening to participants in the story as any demon or wraith. More importantly, The Ring is really about the struggle of different characters thrown together in an extraordinary circumstance.

Edge horror is:

* Focusing on small, vivid images instead of the whole scene
* A slow, building of tension, rather than lots of action
* Not afraid to use violence or gore, but never just for the sake of it
* A very personal story, rather than one that is epic in scope
* A place where depravity and terror live and breathe Because edge horror is defined more by style than anything else, it often crosses genres. It has courted Lovecraftian horror as well as more traditional Gothic horror. Just about any kind of horror story can be viewed through the edge horror lens.

Coming March 2006.
Very cool. Congrats.

The game system uses the Omni rules, which is Morrigan's own generic ruleset. It is similar to the system they used for Talislanta, if people are familiar with that.

I'm glad you said this. I've been meaning to address this issue for sometime. Some time ago, I talked about how I got into the RPG business. I said that I had gotten into the field by going to lots of conventions. This seemed to discourage people.

I want to amend that earlier statment. Really, I got into the business through networking. Getting to know people.

It is very possible for anyone to do the same. You simply have to be willing to work at it. And the best way to start is by doing what you all are doing here. By posting on bboards, maintaining websites, and writing fan material, you all are demonstrating your writing capabilities. Who's a developer going to consider more? Someone who says: "I've been a GM for many years and I'm a big fan!" Or someone who says: "I've published over 20 Quoth the Raven Articles, maintain my own website on horror, and have worked as an editor for a compliation of short stories."

Work, work, work. It can be done. And expect to hear the words "no" many times.

I've been accustomed to that already.

But yeah - that's what peaopl forget. They think there is a "great secret" that everybody who's "Made it" is holding back on them, but really, they just (mostly) tend to work harder.

Thanks.

Trusting the short summary that was posted, and Rucht's skills in writing for horror, I ordered it today.

Transaction is made via paypal and quick.

Joel, I appreciate the vote of confidence. 8)

Understand that Unhallowed is a supplement to the Omni System, which Morrigan press puts out. You unfortunately need the core rulebook to play Unhallowed.

Known and understood! I ordered this material in order to improve my RL game and pick your brain and improve my game ;)

But I might be impressed by the setting and get the rules afterward ;)

Congrats, Rucht! I heard about your job about the same time that I got my contract with Morrigan, but I wasn't sure if it would be okay to say anything publicly yet or not. I'm very happy with my own gig over there, so it's nice to see other people I (sort of) know working in the industry too. :) I've got a couple of little things in the works after my big Morrigan project, but I'm trying to take a breather before jumping into another 160-page book.

Good job, and good luck on the next one!
