Lycanthrope shape change!

Post by Barovian gravedigger »

When a werecreature change shape via Alternate form, it`s a standard action but does it provoques attack of opportunity if in base to base with an opponant?

I would say yes but i just can confirm!

If it were a spell-like ability then yes, but Alternate Form is a Supernatural ability and thus does not provoke an AO.

However, I would rule that shapechanging in battle leaves the character undefended (hard to block attacks when contorting and shifting). They're opening themselves up to an attack.

It's the Dungeon Master's call really and can go either way.

Even if the rules say otherwise, I would generally give AoO to all players within 5 foot of a shapechanging were-creature. However, I wouldn't to a creature such as a doppleganger, as I don't picture that as a contorting, natural process, more of an illusion wearing off.

You both go the same way as i do, so i will give A.O. to any creatures/players in BtB with a "shifting" werecreature!

thanks!

Might there be a difference between a natural and an afflicted lycanthrope?

We might say that an afflicted one do provoque A.O. because of this uncontrolled change of state but since a natural one do have a complet control over it`s nature it would not provoque A.O.

This is of course only fluff!

Given that reasoning, you might not award AoO against afflicted lycanthropes who have mastered the Control Shape (feat or skill?) and passed the DC.

I know I wouldn't give AoO against a natural lycanthrope.
