I mean, yeah, the Abber Nomads are sort of like Aboriginals and they are kinda like a Dreaming Gone Wrong... you know what, I think I just proved myself wrong. But anyway... this idea seems to be popular (definately more popular than what I was originally intending- which was basically Ravenloft in Space), so is anyoe interested in actually trying to "stat up" this idea?
Space has not been excluded yet. I was thinking that some of the pocket realms could actually be space stations circling the earth, and that realms like Arak or Bluetspur might actually be on the moon!

BTW, I also thought Australia because of the large expanses in the interior, and I though that served some weirdness from the NL as well.

That is the same reason why I think nothing here should be american-centric, even though there are a majority of americans, or European centric or x-centric for that matter. It may make us others feel we are not intended receivers or that you really don't care how differently we view things or not.
I respect that localizing materials makes it harder to understand or relate to them, and I too prefer more generalized material, but...

So what?

I come across forum postings in languages I can't even read. And rather than ask everyone to speak a language we can all understand, I ignore the posting. I skip to the next post. It's the same thing here; either people understand and there's no issue, or they don't and should just move on. I didn't care for the Americanized Modern Ravenloft either as a matter of taste*, and so I glossed it over rather than request people post stuff I liked better.

And not to totally derail:

I always wanted to do the Springfield Cluster. Four domains, all named Springfield, from four very different times and American cultures. The first is a pious Mennonite farming community of 1500 people, dating from the late 19th century. Demons (actually mutated goblinoids) and witches are common here, tormenting the common folk and keeping them in line. Witch trials are quite common, and strangers are viewed with immense suspicion. The Darklord is the community's leader, Jonathan Springfield, who has proclaimed himself to be the Lord, and has worked "miracles" enough to prove it; his treachery was in ordering the execution of 300 people who sought passage through his city in an event similar to the Mountains Meadow Massacre.

The second is the Springfield Army Base, dating from the 1950's. While it's fully staffed it was not fully stocked with supplies. Of note is the frequent discovery of various types of dopplegangers and mind controllers on the base; paranoia is rampant. Strangers doubly so, as none of these creatures and problems started until the Base was joined next to "those places". Private 1st Class Jake Engram is the Darklord here. His dark secret is that the base once held a nuclear missle... until he snapped and launched it at the "Soviet traitors" who convinced his fiance he wasn't fit for marriage. After launching the missle, he passed out and awoke at the base. Everyone acted as if nothing happened, but he knew the truth! He knew that the pod people, and the Soviet psychics, and their Martian masters were behind it all!

Next is Springfield University, a prestigious school from the 1990's with departments in medicine, communications, and engineering. However, the city is filled with gangs of serial killers controlled by Satanic cults. While the most technologically advanced, they know they're targets for the zealous witch hunters and the resource starved soldiers. Dr. Janice "Spider" Quinnley is this domain's Darklord. One of several heads of the University Governing Body, the domain's ruling power, she is the only one to be part of the Satanic Cult that created the Hunters. Once her experiments in genetic alteration and pyschological conditioning to create the Hunters were perfected, at the cost of dozens of human lives, the Dark Powers claimed her.

The fourth resides high in orbit over the other three. Springfield Station is the smallest of the four, consisting of only 103 people living in terror of each other and the horrors they observe below. Built as a high-class resort in space, in the year 2047, SStation has been the site of a horrible accident. Roughly a quarter of the station was destroyed, including all the food stocks and water. SStation has been forced to raiding the domains below in their shuttle craft, fearing for their safety. Meanwhile, something seems to be feeding off the few survivors. What is know to a handful of survivors is that Chief Electrical Engineer Gale Davron was responsible for releasing the warbot that killed her abusive ex-husband. What they don't know is that the remorselessness Gale felt when the warbot murdered another 36 people besides her husband during an explosive decompression was enough to pull them all into the Mists.

The first three provide a neat source of conflict and tension, adding the fourth as a late surprise is fun as well. I mean a crumbling mansion, filled with murder and treachery, but set in space! And when it's limited play is borne out, the station can fall apart and burn up on descent. Driving the other three domains into a panic as the Cluster reshapes itself.

D.J.

* Oh yeah, my gripe with Modern Ravenloft Americana is that it's too much like the "what Clan would famous person X belong to" I used to see Vampire fans do. If you like it, fine, but I'm gonna' just keep on keepin' on.

It might be a bit too high-fantasy, but Horrors of Weird War 2 has a few critters that might fit into the Springfield Army Base for tha cluster. I can't remember the names, and the computer they're on has a dead monitor, but I remember two that might be especially fitting: a "Skinwalker" (a human being who willing allowed himself to be skinned alive and can imitate others by eating their brains and then wearing their skins" and a "Psychic Gargoyle" (an experiment in super-psykers; it looks like a grotesquely ugly midgit with an oversized, bulging, vein-covered head). "Doctor X" (a template for sadistic scientist/torturers) might also be good.

Whoa, there's some serious negativity.
I wasn't suggsting an amero-centric system, per se, but I was using what ever archetypes I found fit the best. Its not so much that real life people should be Modernized, so much as Ravenloft characters be included in a manner that best fits them.

For example, what would you say a modern Arijani would be like? You might be able to do a straight up Rahshasa conversion - but how would he fit into the scheme of a modern era world?

PS: Nathan, I love the Wild Hunt idea. Maybe the Fey don't have a city, per se, but a road. Something like, Route 23, a road that doesn't exist except when the Hunt drives through. Mortals might be able to ride with The Hunt, but sooner or later they fall behind. They become broken men, aimlessly driving on, haunting biker bars and rest stops, until they burn out on drugs, crash and burn, or just vanish into the blowing dust.

I think it would be best to not try to place the darklord in our world but rather recreate a modern day verson of the classic domains for them to fit into.

For example- Barovia is a classic example of urban spawl left to crumble under its own weight. Block after block of abandoned crumbling buildings lie in the shadow of Von Zarovich towers with the small subburb of Barovia nessled just past the now brackish Tser river. Clouds of rancid green smoke billow out over crowded factories ringing the subburb with an area of toxic fog. Only those with expensive gas masks can make it through.

Those lucky enough to have homes and jobs in Bavoia are very suspisious of all outsiders bealving the newcommers will take thier hard earned jobs. The other scattered towns are a little more welcoming to vistors but have little to offer. All jobs are given and taken by the will of Strahd and as he owns all land in the domain opening up any new buisness or every doing buiness in Barovia is a long and involved process. Those who show themselves to be technicly savy or outwardly suspicious (Ie: Mages) are openly shunned. Tradional values hold sway in the domain with most travels inside before sunset to avoid the roving Biter and Bonegnawer gangs who dwel in the towers shadow.

Noooo......If you need industrial sprawl, turn to Nova Vaasa, Dementlieu, Borca, or Richumelot. Barovia is a backwoods, almost by definition.

Perhaps rather, quiet little townships in the New England Style, but with a secret (ala The Lottery). Rural, not Urban.

Split the difference. Make the Village of Barovia a "company town": a dying Rust Belt community where a single factory pollutes the landscape and works its employees like dogs, as if "draining the life" out of them. The town's old rustic churches are in a shambles, its numbed residents are in despair, and every bit of land or property worth having is owned by a reclusive, uncompromising millionaire: a man who suffers from a nasty disease that can only be kept in check by daily blood transfusions, which he extorts from debtor-families because he doesn't trust blood banks.

I think we should meet in the middle. Make the RL fit where it should in the real world, and then alter it to fit the conditions of today.

But I do think mayb we/I are getting culture specifci happy. Barovia does not NEED to be in E Europe- the Rust Belt idea is good. But a lot of the ideas around are still quite good.

What of the Mists? Are they perhaps the manifestation of a used weapon, a doomsday device that polluted the earth?

re: ethnocentricity

Why not imagine an alternate future Ravenloft based in North America when most of the original Ravenloft is based in Europe?

I think the mists should stay a floating Bermuda triangle effect that both makes people dissapear completely and leads them astray. Its normal manafesation is a rolling mass of fog but it can apapt to any enviroment. Its the common expanation for flight 99, Amelia Airheart, Jimmy Hoffa and scores of other disapearances.

For Ex: If the PCs are in a large city the sky quicky turns over cast and manholes constantly release steam into the air. The wind picks upblowing clouds of smog and losse trash into the air as lightening starts to flash in the sky. All sounds become muted as the Pc turn down new and strange roads untill they come across a large open park as far as they can see. The once grey sky is now blue and clear and when they look back the city is gone, replaced by the rolling hills of some undeveloped land.

EX2: The PC are on a massive yacht for the yeary Azalin inc corporate party. The plan was to have a quick trip out of Tokyo around the Fiji islands and back in three days. One day out however they run into a freak storm out over the Pacific that allmost threatens to make them turn back. Just then a bolt of lightening strikes the main controll room killing the captain and frying all the electronic instaments. The resulting fire is quickly put out but with no instraments and no visable stars to guide by the ship sales into a deep fog bank that follows the ship for several days. Tentions are high and with food and water running out there have been whispers of possable canibulisum. After two weeks adrift the ship runs aground outside of a small arcapeligo or any other shore the DM wishes.

Re: X-centric comments

I like the ideas presented here, and yes I live in the USA, but I don't see why there should be anything negative posted about them. Granted, a lot of what has been posted deals with the USA in some way, but there had also been some good ideas for other countries / continents as well.

This, to me, is a giant brainstorming session. A place to fuel new ideas and exchange thoughts. Who cares if they are from north america, south america, europe, asia, or where ever. As long as they are good ideas, they can be molded into whatever each person wants them to be.

Besides, I've been pondering on a modern-loft setting for a while anyways. And there are some really cool ideas here. So please, carry on.

I am keeping them for myself; actually I have been thinking about it more.

How about shifting Rokushima Taiyoo to the Balkans, where the fragmented states try to destroy each other? And how about the Amber Wastes actually being in the Gobi Desert, with a more overt Chinese influence?

Well, that's not too bad at all.
For the record, I never thought Anketepot's origin made sense. the idea of an egyptian king "experimenting" on hundreds of people didn't make a lot of sense. Besides, the first Chinese emporer was a real-world wacko about immortality. It would certainly do to have him be a modern reflection of the mummy king.
