Random Question about GC

Post by Jeremy16 »

I was rereading VRG to Fiends and had a sudden thought... Does the Gentleman Caller have a phylactery? He came into the Demiplane during the Grand Conjuction, if I recall, which isn't quite the same as being summoned or transposed so I don't know if the same rules would apply. If he does, what would it be? Any ideas?

An idea: The Phylactery of the GC is not a normal one...instead of being an object his phylactery are...his sons.

They don't always list the phylacteries even for fiends that entered "normally"; Styrix the night hag was summoned by Azalin, but I can't remember or seem to find a phylactery listed for her either.

The Caller's known kids can't be his phytactery, as they only came into being after he'd been in Ravenloft long enough to father them. If his spirit is linked with them in some way, it could be that he's managed to make them "fallback phylacteries", but he'd still need to have received one when he first arrived.

All I could come up with was either the cloak he wears or possibly a walking cane. Something mundane that he carries with him all the time, ala Elsepath's doll.

I just thought it would be nice to nail it down, in case anyone wanted to run an adventure where the PCs get his phylactery and try to banish him.

Even in my Caller article I left it vague, nothing should be too definite about the Caller. He's an object of mystery after all.

Speaking of the GC and in the spirit of the thread's title, here's another random qustion about the GC:

Jester, would you go and stat the GC differently now that there are official stats for incubi that are quite different from succubi stats ?

Stats for incubi? Where?

Also: Perhaps a child of GC entered Ravenloft before he has entered, so his children can very well be his phylactery.
I think that the GC entered Ravenloft long before the GConjuction.

There are official 3E incubus stats in Dragon #353 (in the Malcanthet article) that are (very) different from the 3E succubus. They have a lower CR and are a bit more combat-minded iirc.

To quote the author, James Jacobs in this thread
The incubus in the Malcanthet article is more or less a brand new critter, even though it's certainly not the only time they've appeared in D&D (or d20, for that matter). This incubus is a weaker version of the Monster Manual succubus, but unlike succubi (as they're depicted in the Monster Manual, at least), these incubi generally advance via class levels.

The article talks a little bit about what makes an incubus different from a succubus in male form, but the gist is that succubi use seduction while incubi use force to do their thing.
There's also this conversion of the 2E incubus (from Dragon #54) available in ENWorld's Creature Catalog.

Yeah... incubi don't really use force any more than succubi. They're both all about the seduction. It's likely more the push to make a threatening opponent that can thump players. And even if it's not the Caller is more seduction than combat anyway.

I edited the post above to include the full quote.

Advancing by character levels sure fits the GC. I'll have to reread the incubus entry and compare it to the succubus more closely.

Also another poster remarks:
Incubi are apparently not as powerful as succubi, as their CR is only 3 (and, among other things, their Cha is only 20, the ugly brutes)

If I remember correctly, incubi are portrayed as somewhat more aggressive and forceful than succubi. I believe they are characterized as using force to couple with humans on occasion, as opposed to succubi who just tempt humans into willfully making the choice.

The only example I can think of right now is the legend of King Arthur, specifically Merlin the wizard, whose mother was supposedly an honorable woman who had been assaulted by an incubus.
