Darkon is sometimes referred to as the North Country in very old books. This term is vague, though, and could mean almost anything north of Barovia.



Arak is a legendary country that is said to have once existed in region of the Mountains of Misery. Its native people were supposedly destroyed or driven out by a cataclysmic event- often described as a sandstorm of monumental scale and supernatural origin. Afterward, the region was long rumored to be inhabited by either ghosts or wicked faeries. It was recently colonized by Darkonese, mostly dwarves, without reliable reports of ghosts or faeries hindering the settlement of the region.



Knowledge Religion:


Rats are regarded as sacred creatures not only by some Incabulite cultists, but also by an order of mystics in distant Sri Raji.
They are sometimes considered messengers of the powers of the underworld by the people of Richemulot. It is rumored that a temple dedicated to a rat-god exists in the sewers beneath Pont-a-Museau.



Knowledge: Planes

These exist heavens and hells beyond the material plane. These worlds are the origin points of angels, devils, elemental spirits,etc. Most of these dimensions are inacessible to the living. Two realms that lie closer to the mortal world, and might be touched [if not easily entered] from the prime plane, are the Shadowlands and the Realm of Ghosts.

Both magical travel and 'ghost-walking' through solid objects is possible when a magician or occultist learne to exploit the unusual properties of the two close realms, Ghost and Shadow. It is also possible to build a permanent magical gateway that takes advantage of this, but the methods are little known and so difficult and dangerous that only great mages think to undertake such projects. Such a portal would radiate a strong aura of magic, which would be difficult, but not impossible to conceal. It might look like a door, a tunnel, a mirror, a pool of water,etc. Some portals are one way, others allow passage both ways.


Knowledge :Local and possibly Knoweldge: Dread Realms:

You have reason to suspect the Reneir family, de facto rulers of the city, have access to at least one permanant magical portal. You have not seen the portal yourself, but you have come across various scraps of anecdotal,documentary, and circumstantial evidence suggesting the theory may well be true. This could help to explain their phenomenal sucess as merchants and information brokers. Whether this has any connection to the portal Norzak told you about, or the woman in the mirror, is hard to say.

Knowledge Local/ Knowledge Architecture and Engineering

The cities [and the sewers beneath] in Richemulot are older than the current civilization. The original builders remain mysetrious, as they left many buildings, but few paintings, writings, etc have survived the long years of decay and abandonment that must have come between the disappearance of the cities' first people and the later wave of settlers [who fiound the cities empty].

The sewers are among the largest and best in the world. They do require repair and maintenance, of course, which is handled by the Confraternity of Sewerworkers and Street Cleaners [which also handles the disposal of waste].

Closely allied to the Sewerworkers is the Worshipful Guild of Rathcatchers. The guild handles pest control for the whole city.

I figured we were concluding our respective scenes, and I think I've tapped out all the info there is to have from Mattheo, so I'm excusing myself. Perhaps I'll head back to the manor and discuss things with Master Sancerre. If I'm heading to the rat catchers, I would prefer to do it with Norzak. He seems more their type anyways.

The real Harvest Season starts in August. It depends on the crops in question, but most of the farms in Richemulot harvest their crops between August and October.
