Baron von Aubrecker is dying, or so they say.
Soon enough, Greta von Aubrecker will be the ruler of Lamordia... but what consequences will that have?
Adam and Mordenheim may not care, but the Society of Enlightened Citizens is a group of politically aware villains, and they seem rather patriarchal. So how will they react?
And what are the odds of other nations offering up sons as prospective husbands, in order to forge advantageous political connections?
Drakov probably won't, bit how will the world shift if Greta's fiancé is a D'Honaire or a Renier, a Bolshnik or a Hiregaard... a Graben or a Von Zarovich?
And what of Greta's own ambitions? How do you think she will try to change her lands? Lamordia could stand improvement in several areas, and Greta isn't like her father.

Re: The new Baroness
Lamordia is a Constitutional Federal Monarchy, if I recall it correctly, so every decision of the Baron must be ratified by an assembly; so I guess in the parliament there will be two political currents, a reformer one lead by Greta and a a conservative one lead by tge SEC. Her choise of husband is a matter of state, and it could depend by the leaning of the majority.
I tend to imagin Victor as more political involved, using his vast technological power to amass a vast amount of money and influence, which he uses to lobby the governement to further his own ends(healing Elise, destroying Adam, appraise his ego), and as such, I guess he would probably favour progressive on conservative, as a mean for his own ends.

Re: The new Baroness
I can see a few possibilities emerging from Greta's past, too which i speak the flea-induced madness outbreak in 739 BC. (This event was played out as part of the module Adam's Wrath). Gerta (not Greta) was just a little kid during that time, and she was affected by the fleas, thinking the guards killing each other were her dolls. She also saw her father become paranoid and hostile (I can't remember if it was specifically to her). In any case, we know, at least according to "S", she comes out with her mind intact, but the baron her father went progressively downhill between that and the deaths of his two sons (Henrik died during the fleas of madness incident, IIRC.) I would think that the experience would leave a mark on Gerta, in that it seems she will be much more of an active monarch than her father as well as a warm ruler. One might guess she could hold some resentment against her father's inactive style of rule more focused on the courtly life than being involved in his subjects' lives. Gerta, by contrast, seems to have some active interests in her people's lives.
I think two of her big areas of concern would be shaped by the fleas of madness: 1) unnatural phenomena/creatures, 2) madness. To this end, with #1, I think she could become a potentially valuable ally for the Syndicate of Enlightened Citizens on some things. Perhaps they might view her as a sometimes pawn/sometimes enemy, but she strikes me as quite a shrewd player herself, and she has the will of the people on her side. In any case, I think members of the Syndicate could come together with Gerta on the destruction of unnatural creatures or those with unusual powers.
Regarding madness, from seeing its effects first hand, I think she would take a more active stance in the health of her subjects (mentally and physically- considering her father.) IIRC, Lamordia has some pretty physicians already IIRC, but they’re not as well known for mental health treatment. That sort of thing falls more to Dementlieu and Mordent (the former with several mental health professionals and the latter with the Moussels. I could see her making a push with either for some sort of exchange in order to promote the wellbeing of her people at home. She may be courted by Dementlieuse nobility and she may or may not reciprocate (I don't recall anything in the canon saying the Lamordian baron- her future husband- had to be decided by any assembly. It's a hereditary aristocracy- she inherited the role from her father). In any case, Dementlieuse nobility in question approaching her might do so under influence from the Brain- whom we know is actually Gerta's long lost brother. Of course, Gerta would have to be careful in wooing Dementlieuse nobility- for it could incite the wrath of Falkovnia. Probably not anything so direct as an invasion- they learned their lesson in the Winter War- but maybe spies and saboteurs.

What if the ones courting Gerta were the Vaasi or the Grabens?

Graben Island is so far away and so backwards I have to really think hard to imagine the Grabens doing it, or at least succeeding at it. I suppose the Grabens have a somewhat unemotional personality and cold climate that could match with the Lamordians. Meredoth could also potentially become interested in the "flesh magic" the macabre of the Lamordians practice and wish to steal their secrets, or if nothing else get a pawn that was a head of state. I can't remember if undead Grabenites can reproduce, if not, it's likely the would-be husbands are young and the living either locked out of the loop of the older, undead Grabenites and/or are their willing servants. In any case, lebendtod eventually show up again to make Gerta and her husband into more of them, which could make for an interesting adventure leading into an eventual, far-off confrontation with Meredoth.Rock wrote:What if the ones courting Gerta were the Vaasi or the Grabens?
The Vaasi are a little bit more explicable, in that they are more courtly and aristocratic. Vaasi nobility might have connections to Dr. Illhousen's successor, which would fit in with my scheme on madness above. Nova Vaasa might seek out Lamordia after carving a route through Tepest to Darkon and then moving to the Sea of Sorrows and swinging around to Lamordia. Nova Vaasa may want access to Lamordian [[firearm]]s and high(ish) technology, whereas Lamordia could benefit from the markets Nova Vaasa has access to.

Re: The new Baroness
IMC it was Vladimir Ludzig who was trying to get Gerta under his thumb. He had a whole plan to get her thoroughly brainwashed, but it fell through because a vampyre PC conspirator grew a conscience and flipped. Then there was the disastrous Census Day Massacre, when the vampyres were exposed. Ludzig escaped though, and I had thoughts of having him go after Gerta himself.

Re: The new Baroness
My motivation for the Vaasi and the Grabens making a play was that they're all involved in sea trade, as are the Lamordians. You can't tell me Othmar wouldn't like access to Lamordia's steel mills, forges and gunsmiths. And even if Meredoth detests science as "drudge work", more trade means more resources for his research. Iirc, young Grabens are allowed to live until they've bred a few times, to keep up family numbers, so there should be some suitable candidates.
