Old Kartakan Inn Scenario- need help

Post by Diosamblet »

Greetings to the members of the Cafe de Nuit! I've been a lurker for some time now, but I've chosen to reveal myself ( :P ) because I'd like your comments on the following:

I’m currently staging an adventure in Skald, Kartakass. The party consists of 5 PC’s, all level 6. Basically, a bard called Ellamir (I took the name from Song Snatcher) is murdering bards to steal their essence with an amulet (another element from SS). Lukas suspects her, so he invites her to dine with him at the Inn, supposedly to reminisce adn talk about the latest victim, who was Ellamir’s mentor and Lukas’ friend.

Ellamir has the PC’s trust and friendship. She feels nervous about going there alone, due to the Inn’s unsavory reputation by night, and the fact that she was the bard’s murderer. Thus, she’ll ask the PC’s to have some drinks there while she dines with Lukas, so they’re close by.

Lukas has heard of the amulet, and believes the pendant Ellamir wears to be the legendary item. He will seduce her to get a confession of the crime and maybe of the pendant’s real nature. Afterwards, he plans to make sport of her.

Lukas knows the men downstairs (the PC’s) are her friends. He will take the PC’s and Ellamir to the abandoned shanty town north of the Cauldron (I’m guessing by threatening to kill Ellamir if they don’t obey). Once there, Lukas and a number of wolfweres will give the PC’s and Ellamir a head start before chasing them. If they manage to run away, they get to live.

I want two things out of this scenario:

First, I want the PC’s to dread going to the Old Kartakan Inn. I wish to build up tension from the moment they head towards it, until Lukas appears with Ellamir in his power and asks them to go outside. The problem is how to instill fear into the players. One way would be to have them know the place is a wolfwere den, but just suspecting it might be better. I don’t think merely having them know it has “an unsavory reputation” or that it gets “rowdy” as the night goes on would be enough.

The second objective is to really scare them when they are chased through the woods. I want them to feel they can maybe take on one or two wolfweres, but if they stand and fight they’ll get slaughtered. I’m already planning on doing this section with candlelight, and I’ve found a pretty good and tense chase music.

I’d appreciate any advice on how to create the best atmosphere for the scenario.

Bodies in the river

Post by cure »

Let the party find a half-eaten corpse down stream. You see, well fed wolfweres have little inclination to devour victims right down to the bone. So the remains get tossed over the side. The official, and in fact oft repeated, story for the hideous wounds is that yet another drunk managed to fall into the river, go over the falls, and end up battered to death.

Let the party realise, with more or less work, 1) that corpses frequently appear, 2) that the injuries are consistent with the feasting of very large, sadistic, and not especially hungry wolves, and 3) that no one, especially government officials, wants to acknowledge either fact in what amounts to a vast conspiracy of silence, with the inn ever looming menacingly in the background.
