R.I.P. Steve Irwin

Post by Rotipher of the FoS »

For those who haven't yet heard, "Croc Hunter" Steve Irwin was killed yesterday while filming a children's documentary on the Great Barrier Reef. In a freak accident, a stingray which he was swimming above got spooked, lashed out with its tail, and pierced his heart with a venomous barb. Mr. Irwin was 44, and is survived by his wife Terri, daughter Bindi, and son Bob.

Rest in peace, "Steve-O". If ever there was a real 20th level ranger, you were it.

Well, the guy was a bit of a nut, but I don't think I ever saw a documentry of his where he didn't explain the lethality of doing what he did in the wild.
Despite his showy-ness, he re-introduced us to the wonderful animal kingdom and constantly reminded us of the beautiful and dangerous creatures that share our world.
In another way, he reminds us that risk is a part of life. Every time you step outside, you roll the dice. When you fumble that natural 1 it doesn't matter how big an expert you are.
Better to go doing something you love.

I'm saddened by his death, but not exactly surprised about HOW he died: an attack by a dangerous wild animal.

I loved Steve-O, he's one of my heroes! Him and Stephen Hawling are the people I admire most in this world. I'm gonna miss Steve-O

I didn't like his show, it was like jackass for me. (Kids, don't do this at home)

However, I read he was a great guy for nature protection and all, so he can't be just that bad :) It saddens me to see him misunderstood, while I understand he was such a hero in Australia. Oh well, there's a sting ray that doesn't know what it did.
