The Ashington family was a noble family known to have change from people of noble character into people of depravity and corruption[1]. Disaster struck Ashington Manor after a two nights of horrible murder, transforming the house into a cursed relic feared by all. Now the manor exists mostly in ruins, unoccupied save by beasts and the most desparate or depraved bandits. The family itself is thought to be extinct, save perhaps for an illegitimate child[2].

History

The family portrait hall of Ashington Manor once showed- and still does during the right temporal fluctuations- the older Ashington generations with more benevolent expressions and the younger generations with more malevolent expressions[3]. Elsewhere, in the manor's occult library, four generations of Ashington lords collected works of obscure lore in numerous different languages and degrees of authenticity[4] Lord Herod Ashington, the lord of the manor at the time curse was levied, followed in his predecessor's interest in the occult by dabbling in it[5].

On a night eight and a half decades ago, the young Vistani runaway named Rozaleen was captured by a pair of depraved noblemen and brought to Ashington Manor to serve as a source of entertainment for the depravyed partygoers there. At the behest of Lord Herod Ashington, Rozaleen performed a series of readings for Lord Ashington and his guests. Unable to get anything else, Rozaleen kept reading the cards despite them only coming up with the results portending doom. Enraged, Lord Ashington murdered Rozaleen. Rozaleen laid a curse that would cause the tragedy to repeat every 17 years in some form or another. The following night, Lord Ashington turned on his guests, egged on by the Vehrteig Maekon, only to be killed by Maekon herself. Thanks to Rozaleen's curse and its empowerment by her tarokka deck, these events have repeated themselves once every 17 years[6].

At some point later, Byron Ashington-Welles, of distant relation to the Ashingtons of the manor, attempted to redeem the Ashington name by turning the manor into a Hospice of Hala. Ashington-Welles operated this Blessed Hall of Hala for 13 years and helped innumerable people. For a time, the Ashington name was once again seen in a better light. However, the tragedy of the manor repeated itself as Ashington-Welles master-at-arms, Gavel, went on a killing spree on the manor grounds. As before, Maekon was there to push things to the breaking point[7]

After the hospice massacre, Ashington Manor fell into periods of disuse and attempted revitalization for varying purposes- though none by the Ashingtons themselves. Eventually, fire consumed much of the manor, leaving it in ruins to be occupied by wild creatures and the most depraved or desperate bandits[8].
