The chain golem is a magical animated construct and as such lacks the dread golem template. It is a mindless automaton that obeys in the most straightforward and literal way possible the orders of its maker, drawing no conclusions and taking no initiative. The creature will not resort spontaneously to special actions such as tripping or disarming, but it may either be given a specific instruction to make one such attack or may be directed as necessary by a maker who is immediately at hand. When issuing instructions to the animate thing, its maker is wise to error on the side of simplicity. The creature has a vaguely humanoid outline, and consists entirely of barbed, bladed and spike chains of all sizes that clank and screech about one another. When inactive it offers no hint of being something other than a sculpture, albeit it bizarre, of chains. Its employment is often as a bodyguard or a guardian.

Construction

The successful maker of a chain golem is a x spellcaster of at least the yth level. He or she pours x,000 gp (or its equivalent) into bringing his or her idea to "life". Of this total, z gp are spent fashioning the thing's body, which takes z weeks and a successful Craft (weaponsmithing) check (DC x). The ultimate animation of the thing requires x XP from the caster and the casting of the following spells: x. An x spellcaster must in fact be imposed upon to cast the last spell.
