Chemical elements are the indivisible building blocks of existence according to the chemist of the early Steam Age (cultural level 10). The same claim is made for the elements - air, earth, fire and water - by the alchemist beginning in the Classical period (Cultural Level 4). Leading figures late Renaissance period (cultural 9) become interested in processes cannot be readily accounted for in terms of the four elements. This is followed in the last years of the period by what would turn out to be the first discovery of a chemical element: phosphorus. A string of subsequent discoveries early in the ensuing period would yield a growing table of chemical elements.
