Fihyrs are the accumulated fears and nightmares made flesh, requiring many people to experience fright over a sustained amount of time. The appearance of a fihyr is nothing short of nightmarish: spheroid masses of soft flesh and what seems like throbbing brain tissue covered by a flimsy skin. A fihyr has no legs in the conventional sense but rather moves upon two longer tentacles supported by a thrashing tangle of lesser tentacles. Like a gibbering mouther, a patchwork of eyes and mouths haphazardly dot the monstrosity's visage. Fittingly, all fihyrs have the Frightful Presence ability.[1]

Fihyrs come in two varieties. The standard or lesser fihyr has about a two ft. diameter to the sphere and only a dim intelligence. Although still frightening, the standard fihyr usually only exists for a brief time before perishing at dawn. Sunlight destroys normal fihyrs, but they do not flee it and will readily pursue prey into their own destruction. Only if several fihyrs combine together into the much more powerful and intelligent greater fihyr will there being a longer-lived threat.[1]

Noncanon Information

A larger exploration on fihyrs, including customization and assignment of magnitudes similarly to ghosts, is included in the Report on Fihyrs in Quoth the Raven Issue 11.[2]

Descriptive Text

[...]Let me indulge more on the subject of superstition.
One of the people who had the pleasure of travelling with me during my time outside Darkon was a well educated and rational halfling, a master crafter of pulvus ignea, who had the only defect to have developed in his life a rather... Lamordian view on religion.
He told me of an encounter he had before meeting me. He told me confuse words of "pure fear", "terrors", "tentacles and wings"... He told me of something that cornered him and the other companions in an old farm and seemed to grow stronger and larger with every passing minute they were trapped, frightned, in that house. To destroy the creature, he told me, they resolved in burning down the building.
As you can see, even the most rational persoan can be swayed by mere superstition: I can tell you the creature was nothing more than the illusion cast by an evil mage we had to fight some weeks later.
I am sure of it, since in all my travels, I never faced such a creature.
