In the Land of Mists, as in most other worlds, light from the sun is the energy that sustains plants and every other creature dependent directly or indirectly upon them for survival. Unsurprisingly, sunlight and the sun are widely esteemed and are even worshipped, Belenus and Ra beings sun gods and the Morninglord being the god of the dawn. Yet there are creatures and corners of the world where the sun and its light are despised and there are even efforts afoot to extinguish both. The undead, sustained by negative energy, rarely have any fondness for sunlight and often are incapacitated, harmed or destroyed by it. Against the sun they can do naught but hide. The illithid, perched atop a subterreanean ecosystem sustained by heat energy and chemical energy, are the inhabitants of a realm that is never touched by the light of the sun and they scheme to extend that reality to the entirety of existence.
