“As seasoned troops, the survivors of the first invasion, we were kept close to the Darkonese frontier. The unpleasant assignment took an ugly turn after a few weeks. Whenever we would raise our heads up out of the muck to assume the slightest offensive posture, a flock of Drakov’s beloved zweifalk, only no longer living and partially stripped of their plumage, with eldritch runes inscribed upon their bared flesh, would swoop down, seeking to maim and terrorise. Magically and mundanely, with fell enchantments and with claws and beaks, they would seek to steal our sight, their frightful presence often sufficing to put our bravest to ignominious flight.”
