Death House is a haunted house in the Village of Barovia that was once home to a cult that viewed Strahd as something of a dark messianic figure. After they captured, murdered, and sacrificed a band of adventurers Strahd had lured to Barovia to be his playthings, he slew them all. The spirits of the cultists and some of their relatives still linger inside. The House itself shows limited sentience or at least awareness of its environs and its occupants; it is able to create illusions of children, Thorn Durst and Rose Durst, to lure in unsuspecting prey. Death House is of course a trap, for the Mists surround it at the whims of Strahd and the Dark Powers, until a sacrifice is made to the cult in the dungeon levels beneath or the cult is defied (earning the wrath of Lorghoth the Decayer and intruders escape. If the house is destroyed or damaged, it can reform and fix itself.[1]
