Jalanka is an isolated village in far southern Sri Raji. It surrounds a pond within a mangrove forest near the Bahkuku River. It was founded centuries ago by refugees from elsewhere in the empire of which Sri Raji was a part. Even as expanded trade helps the rest of Sri Raji to become more closely interconnected, the people of Jalanka strive to remain isolated.[1]
In truth, the refugees who founded Jalanka were guided by a vision from the god Varuna, who offered the refugees a home if they restored a temple dedicated to him. He also sent a Makara to aid them. Unfortunately, Sri Raji was drawn into the Mists before the restoration could be completed, and that sudden severance from its deity caused the makara to go mad. It firmly believes that it is surrounded by great evils (which it is) and that the best way to confront such evils is by flooding them out (it is not). The people of Jalanka, having no interest in seeing their home washed away, distract the makara with substantial offerings of food and outright lie to it about the presence of evil in the land.[2]
