Troupers are active members of Carnival who have abnormal anatomy or abnormal physiology. Troupers, or at least those who are among the Living, are altered to a degree by the Twisting, their exterior changing to give visible expression to their true inner nature. Troupers who are animate but are not alive have by that very fact abnormal anatomy or abnormal physiology such as Mister ? who is dread golem. The Skurra, who are Vistani warded against the Twisting, and the animals that they keep, that are likewise warded, have neither abnormal anatomy nor abnormal physiology and are not troupers. Stray animals that accompany Carnival and succumb to the Twisting become creeplings, crawlers, and fidgets, but are not activite participants in the show and are not troupers. The Abominations, who are criminals punished for their transgression against others by being exposed to the raw fury of the Twisting and who are imprisoned for life in cages, are likewise not troupers.
