Alchemy
In recorded history, Alchemy has been around since the dawn of the current era, possibly longer. It is a combination science (chemistry) and philosophy, and is according to legend focused around the transmutation of various substances, such as from Lead to Gold.
This common alchemical stereotype is taken to mean litterally, however, many people miss the facts with alchemy. It is a mystery school and is full of symbology and hidden meaning. The transmutation of lead to gold is a metaphor for the transmutation of the human soul from the mortality human condition into immortality and freedom (ascention).
Regardless of Alchemy's historical background, in Ravenloft it is a real and magical science, enabling the construction of many different concoctions with varying results.
