Taking ancestry from humans whose essences were mixed with that of snakes, yuan-ti have forms mixing features of both, with some almost passable as human whereas others] are clearly monstrous with mostly serpentine features, and yet others showing more a balanced mix of the two. They are entirely carnivores, with birds and humans as especially desired food^[1][2].

Spoken of in legend as evil, self-serving, and manipulative creatures, yuan-ti are nonetheless general persuasive and intelligent enough to form alliances with other creatures of darkness, if only to serve their missions. Yuan-ti society is generally highly religious, their remote communities centering around temples to dark reptile gods (by which the original cult of their human ancestors were transformed by). Yuan-ti hold reptiles in general in high esteem^[1][2].

Yuan-ti excel in trapmaking, stealth, and ambush, though prefer to use magic, psionics, and ranged weapons over actual melee. They can employ a variety of spell-like abilities|spell-like and psionic abilities, including transforming into normal venomous snakes, disguising their appearance with chameleon power, detecting poisons^[1][2].

Though seemingly rare in Ravenloft, yuan-ti may exist in some of out-of-the-way locations. In Har'Akir, the yuan-ti have a cult dedicated to Apep dedicated overthrowing the Akiri veneration of Osiris.^[3]. The yuan-ti of Sunderheart belong to the Cult of Zehir and have infiltrated much of the Sunderheart City Guard there^[4].
