The Watchers' Stronghold was, and perhaps still is, the home to the Watchers at the Gate. It is a one day's trek into the Mountains of Misery south of Tempe Falls along the Strigos Road. The stronghold once served as a checkpoint above the former road that joined Darkon, Arak and Barovia before that route was severed by the Scourge of Arak in 588 BC. The Watchers at the Gate warded the structure, wards broken during its capture by the servants of Death. The stonghold boasted a library of interest for its arcane lore. Secreted away within the structure was the Key to the Abyss.
