In Curse of Strahd, Yan was a Vistani thief who was exiled from his tribe for stealing from them. Yan later wound up traveling with Rictavio. After Yan tried to steal Rictavio's wagon and Piccolo, Rictavio struck him dead and then used magic oils to preserve Yan's head. These oils allowed Yan to recall the previous converations Rictavio had with it, and Rictavio started using speak with dead to learn more about Barovia and the Vistani. The head was left in Van Richten's Tower.[1]
