A body part is a part of a body. A body part, especially when seperated from the rest of the body, is considered to be a thing. The extent to which there is life in a body part taken from a still living body is a question actively studied by biology and medicine, with philosophical and psychological implications for the understanding of personal identity. This matter is also of intense interest to religion as received ideas as to the nature of the soul may be called into question and become subject to doubt. Religion then might prefer such research to not exist. In so far as a religion considers the body to be sacred, it may oppose the treatment of body parts as mere things. Indeed, in lands where religion has substantial political influence, the treatment of body parts may be governed by a very extensive and very restrictive body of laws.
