A spiritual leader exercises significant influence over the people of one or more lands. He or she may do so in the absence of a temporal leader, like Wyan in Tepest, as both a spiritual and a temporal leader, like High Priest Yagno Petrovna in G'Henna, Elana Faithold in Nidala and Alferd Timothy in Verbrek, or with the backing of a temporal leader who in turn is backed, like Himmelsk Naeve Pieter Jergaar in Nova Vaasa. The leader of the Cult of the Ancestral Choir in Kartakass or of the Cult of the Morninglord in Barovia would be a cult leader rather than spiritual leaders as his or her authority is not recognised by the temporal leader of the land, he or she commands far less influence than the temporal leader of the lands, and he or she cannot hope to survive should he or she attempt to rival the temporal leader of the land.
