A moonstone is a gemstone that appears similar to a pearl, although moonstones are much rarer. Each moonstone is bonded to a moonbeast that can inherently tell its location and whether it is in the possession of another creature. Though otherwise not too concerned with the moonstone, a moonbeast nonetheless tracks down any other would-be owners of its moonstone and merciless slaughters them before taking the stone back with it. However, the moonstone may be discarded by the moonbeast somewhere along the trip back to its lair.^[1]

A further complication to the perplexing situation is that possessing a moonstone can cause a mounting attachment to, even obsession with, it over a number of weeks. Such an obsession will cause its owner to do anything possible to avoid losing the moonstone. The obsession may go under the radar until the character encounters a situation which would threaten the loss of the item.^[1]

A moonbeast can detect its moonstone if it is in the same cluster as the moonbeast but not further beyond. The mind flayers of Bluetspur sometimes steal moonstones purposefully and leave them in the lairs of their enemies.^[2]
