Caves are cavities in rock of sufficient size to admit creatures of at least medium size. A cave may have a depth of only a few feet or may be an immense complex consisting of scores of chambers, shafts and tunnels.

A cave typically supports a complex ecosystem. The mouth of a cave hosts flora and fauna reliant upon the light of day such as ferns and bears. As the light fades away and the mouth of the cave is left behind, plants become ever rarer, fungi become the dominant flora, and nocturnal fauna such as bats become the rule. In the perfect darkness beyond, fungi are the lone flora and the fauna is, for the most part, adapted to an existence that is to be spend entirely underground as with subdwellers.
