The Fracture is a underground network of caverns.[1] spanning the borders between Tepest and The Shadow Rift.[1][2] Escaping the definitive doom of the Mists of Shadow, the Fracture remains the safest known (or at least most frequently used[2] and only continuously available[3]) way of traversing from the Shadow Rift to the outside world. It can even be used across closed domain borders[1]. However, the Fracture is itself an inherent mystery, as anyone who travels through it is afflicted with amnesia of the passage's details upon coming to the other side.[1][2] The Fracture even defies attempts to map it, as the mapping materials always decay to worthlessness..[1]Characters who pass through may gain or lose items, be afflicted with damage, use up resources, or receive other unremembered boons or maladies upon coming through the other side.[4] The Warrior's Deck is an example of an item gained from the Fracture.[5]
The Tepestani side of the Fracture's entrance is said to be in the southwestern area of Tepest, although "S" was unable to locate it even with help from directions gleaned from (albeit coerced) powrie.[2] The Fracture, which is actually somewhere in the Wytchwood[6], is not impossible to find, as evidenced by Jilliavere tin Moran's passage through it.)[7] On the Shadow Rift side, the undead remnant of a mortal, the hermit wight named Kristov, may offer information on the Rift and the Arak to passersby but at the cost of allowing the energy drain of a creature.[8]
Although the Fracture seems more reliable than others of its kind, it is by no means the only passage between the outside world and the Shadow Rift.[9]
