Caves are cavities in rock that are capable of admitting creatures of at least medium size. A cave may have a depth of only a few feet or may be an immense complex consisting of scores of chambers, shafts and tunnels.

A cave typically supports a complex ecosystem. The mouth of a cave hosts flora and fauna adapted to the light of day such as ferns and bears. As the mouth of the cave is left behind and the the light of day fades to twilight, shade plants give way to fungi and nocturnal creatures such as bats become the rule. In the perfect darkness beyond, fungi are the lone flora and the fauna is adapted to an exclusively subterranean existence with the subdweller being but one example.
