Mystra is the main goddess of magic on the world of Toril in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting[1]. Three incarnations of Mystra have been known to exist.

  • First was the Chaotic Neutral Mystryl[2], who was born due to a violent blending of the essences of the sister goddesses Selûne[3] and Shar[4].
  • After Mystryl was forced to sacrifice her existence to safeguard the Weave of magic, her portfolio was taken up by the second incarnation: the Lawful Neutral Mystra [5]. This version of the goddess died in defiance of the commands of the overgod Ao [6] during the Time of Troubles[7].
  • After the Time of Troubles had ended, Ao offered the portfolio of goddess of magic to the third and so far final incarnation, the Neutral Good Midnight[8], who renamed herself Mystra to preserve continuity with the faithful.

Portfolio

At the heart of Mystra's portfolio lie magic and the Weave which allows creatures to use it. Mystryl was also goddess of time, which she used to curtail the possibilities of time travel using magic. The second incarnation and first Mystra further limited the level of spells that mortals might access. All incarnations of Mystra have treated magic and the Weave with complete seriousness, working in many ways to preserve the latter and expand the use and knowledge of the former throughout the world of Toril. It may indeed be said that unless a matter involves the propagation and love of magic and the preservation of the Weave in some fashion, Mystra would be unlikely to involve herself with it.

Alignment

Currently Neutral Good. (If the third incarnation's plans of absorbing the Shadow Weave[9] of Shar had gone through, it might have changed to True Neutral. Since the Spellplague[10] occurred before Mystra could put such plans into motion and the Shadow Weave was destroyed along with the old Weave, we can never be certain.)

Cleric Alignments

Chaotic Good, Lawful Evil, Lawful Good, Lawful Neutral, Neutral Good

(The third incarnation chose to honour the commitment of priests who had been devoted to her precedessor, regardless whether their alignment clashed with her own.)

Holy Symbol

  • Mystryl: A blue, four-pointed star.
  • Mystra: A blue-white star.
  • Midnight: Circle of seven blue-white stars with red mist flowing from the center.

Favoured Weapon

Midnight: shuriken.

Spell Domains

Midnight: Good, Illusion, Knowledge, Magic, Rune, Spell

Trivia

The Red-Robed, Krinnish Wizard Wick of the Heroes of Chibiloft is an apostate worshipper of Mystra, having rejected her offer of becoming one of her Chosen[11], and having cursed both her and Lunitari for their influence on his life before he came to the Demiplane of Dread. While he still worships her (or claims to), he does not wish to face her until he has come to the end of his natural, mortal span. As such, Mystra is at least associated with Chibiloft -- in the Netbooks, anyway.

Evanar is the secret Mother of Champions to Mystra; condemned to immortality so she can give birth to champions Mystra requires to preserve the balance of magic and the Weave. Their relationship has become adversarial, as Evanar wishes no part of childbirth, yet grieves deeply for each of her children to have died for the sake of prophecy, and longs for death as a reprieve.
