Anastasia Kartova Petrovich (458 BC[1]-485 BC[2] was the daughter of the Burgomaster Kartov and sister of Ludmilla Kartova.[3] Through a short-lived romance with a Vistani named Petya, she gave birth to a child named Alexi "Sasha" Petrovich.[4]

History

In 475 BC, Anastasia was involved in a forbidden relationship with a Vistani named Petya. Burgomaster Kartov bore a hatred for Petya, a Vistani whom was romancing Anastasia. When Andrei the Butcher falsely accused Petya of thievery, Burgomaster called for Petya's hanging. Just arrived in the Land of Mists, Jander sent some wolves to break up the lynch mob. Burgomaster Kartov revealed his cowardice and fled, abandoning his daughter to whatever fate the wolves would have given her.[5] With their momentary safety assured, Anastasia and Petya said their goodbyes, permanently parting ways for their mutal safety. Anastasia swore an oath of permanent friendship to Jander for his help.[6]

After Petya learned of Jander's vampiric nature, he rushed back to let Anastasia know. However, he faced a brutal beating from Burgomaster Kartov and his servants. Anastasia called them to stop the attack, shaming her father for his cowardice in the face of the wolf attack, before treating Petya's wounds enough to allow his escape.[7] The burgomaster's show of cowardice and public shaming broke his resolve, somewhat lessening the abuse he put upon the women of the Kartova household.[8]

Anastasia's ill-fated romance with Petya left her with child.[8] She kept the knowledge of Alexi's existence secret from Petya, raising him without a father[4] for ten years.[9]

In 485 BC, the Kartova Family and their cottage were assaulted by Count Strahd, Jander, and some of Strahd's vampiress slaves. Jander made protest to the activities of the other vampires. However, ultimately he betrayed that promise to never let harm come to Anastasia through actions he was involved with. The only survivors of the attack were Alexi (who was absent at the time) and Ludmilla, whom lived thanks to the restraint Jander used in feeding upon her [[blood].[10]

In order to prevent the Kartova household from rising again as vampires, Martyn Pelkar and Alexi staked and properly disposed of the corpses.[11]
