Arantor, an undead silver dragon, is the Darklord of the Shadowfell Domain Monadhan. Detailed in the Domain of Dread: Monadhan, The Traitor's Hold article in the 4th Edition era of Dragon Magazine, Arantor comes from the unnamed world in the 4th Edition Points of Light implied setting.

In the Points of Light game world, Arantor was once a champion of Arkhosia in the war against the corrupt empire of Bael Turath. Arantor's shining reputation was highly important to the silver dragon. After accidentally instigating a civilian massacre, Arantor peformed many acts to keep his reputation from tarnishing, only to tarnish his soul in the very process.[1]

Background

Arantor and his daughter, Imrissa, fought for the nation of Arkhosia against Bael Turath. Upon orders from their superiors, father and daughter swept what they thought was a remote military encampment hidden deep in the jungle. Arantor and Imrissa made their first strike before discovering the horrific truth: the outpost was no military facility but instead a refugee camp. Imrissa declared they should report it, but Arantor only wanted to conceal the truth. Angered by Imrissa's disgust at his cowardice, Arantor struck her down in a fit of rage. Horrified at his sins, Arantor destroyed the entire refugee camp to conceal his wrongdoing.[1]

Arantor refrained from ever returning to Arkhosia, instead secreting himself away to untamed regions. Arantor only came out of seclusion to periodically destroy Turnathi facilities and interests, heedless of whether they were military or civilian. Eventually, he was struck down by Turnathi dragonslayers. Despite this apparent death, he lived on.[2]

Arantor awoke within Monadhan, a distorted, Shadowfell reflection of the camp he destroyed and its environs. Years upon years of failed escapes led to profound despair, and Arantor became resigned to live out the rest of his years until death claimed him. Yet death did not relieve him of his cursed nature, for he rose as an undead being. As his form became skeletal, he found it was Imrissa's heart, rather than his own, beating within his chest. The corrupted heart began whispering the numerous and many identities of those Arantor had wrongfully killed. It would never stop.[2]

Current Sketch

Arantor exists in a state of cursed immortality and eternal torment, burdened by the perpetual whispers of the Heart of Darkness within his chest. He is for the most part inactive in his surrounding domain, staying in a lair in the caverns beneath Shantytown. Mostly he attempts to discern a way out, whether through escape or death. From time to time, his feelings overwhelm him and he enters a delusional trance, reenacting the fight with his daughter and the ensuing chaos, fighting an imaginary foe but wreaking real havoc on Shantytown.[3]

Arantor is served by a band of death giants led by Bahlik Gur, though their only roles are to guard the Caverns and make sure nobody escapes the domain.[4]
