The avenger is a class of martial character that exists as a punisher of wrongdoing. Unlike most fighters and similar martial characters, the avenger exists to punish a specific wrongdoer that caused enough woe and tragedy to cause the Avenger to pursue this class in the first place. Usually the transgression of this nemesis involves ultimate betrayal or even murder of someone close to the Avenger's heart. As such, the tragedies that inspire the avengers take over their lives as the avengers become ever more dedicated, even obsessed, to capturing their quarries[1][2]

The singled minded dedication of the avenger is not misplaced. Avengers gain deep understandings of their nemeses, able to track them by intuition and personal analysis alone[1][3]. In addition, the avenger's resolve to undo the hated foe gives the avenger significant bonuses to Constitution and Wisdom in conflicts with the nemesis and, to a lesser degree, the nemesis' minions or even foes bearing close resemblances to the nemesis[4].

Although avengers doggedly pursue wrongdoers, avengers as vigilantes on personal missions of revenge are by nature not lawful (though they may be neutral or chaotic on the ethical spectrum of alignment). Avengers are also not necessarily good, they may also be evil or neutral[1][3].

The lifestyle of the avenger as a pursuer lends itself to movement more than building up a steady power base. As such, avengers do not inherently gain followers or strongholds as some other martial characters do[1].
