As related by the Via Aurum alchemical text, alchemical paths^[1] are groups of associated dread doppelganger salient abilities made possible through the use of High Alchemy. Although there were purportedly once seven Alchemical Paths, there are only six known to be extant today. Each existing path is associated with a particular metal, an Ability Score, and desirable personality trait (humans would call these traits sins), and its associated abilities focus around an aspect of the doppelganger's special powers. Much like a wizard's arcane schools, each Alchemical Path is opposed by a different Alchemical Path; dread doppelgangers are barred from learning abilities of opposing Alchemical Paths.

Each path representing a hierarchy of four power circles or tiers, with each ascending tier requiring techniques from the lower rung down. To master an ability, a dread doppelganger must have hit dice equaling 4 times it circle and have an ability modifier equal to the associated circle.

• Abilities of the first circle are referred to Devotions and and impose a CR modifier of CR +1/4.
• Abilities of the second circle are referred to Dedications and impose a CR modifier of CR +1/2.
• Abilities of the third circle are referred to Dominions and impose a CR modifier of CR +3/4.
• Abilities of the fourth circle are referred to Apogees and impose a CR modifier of CR +1.
