In the (false) history of Graben Island, the Anatal is the ancestor civilization of the Grabenite that currently inhabit Graben Island. They were sea raiders. navigators, barbarians, invaders, and conquerors[1], a warband led by Svidi Full-Sails conquered Graben Island in the mid-300s BC. The Anatal conquerors displaced an order of priests that had lived in in the Black Chapel. Anatal clerics also bound the Flayed Rider conjured by the priests and put it in stasis. Yet by the mid 400s BC, the Anatal colony on Graben had been wiped out by plague.[2]

Although Svidi's colonization ultimately failed, the route route he charted to the island would serve his people's descendants well 300 years later. Themselves displaced by a superior force, refugees of Anatal stock arrived in Graben Island. They were allowed to settle there by Efraim Graben, in return for acknowledging the Graben Family as having primary ownership of the island and thus acting with deferential respect to them. This agreement has served the Graben Family well to the modern day.[3]

The Anatal people recorded their history and culture in an oral tradition of epic poems called Eddas[4], one tradition that the Grabenites have held onto to this day in the importance of bardic poetry and oral recitation.[5] However, the views towards the gruesome aspects of battle have changed as the Grabenites became more conservative.[4]
